FAQs
Where does the route start and finish?
Rongai begins on Kilimanjaro’s quiet northern face near the Kenyan border and ascends through pine forest and moorland beneath Mawenzi. The descent follows the Marangu trail via Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate on the southeastern side, providing different scenery on the way up and down.
What happens on Day 4?
Day 4 is a full acclimatisation rest day at Mawenzi Tarn, beneath the dramatic rock towers of Mawenzi Peak. Light walks, hydration and careful rest are the priority. This is the key advantage of the seven-day itinerary over the six-day option, which omits this rest day.
Does reaching Kibo or Horombo guarantee hut accommodation?
No. Overnight accommodation arrangements are confirmed in your written itinerary. The Rongai ascent uses camping; on the descent the route joins the Marangu trail, but we do not guarantee a hut bed at Kibo or Horombo. The specific arrangement for each overnight is confirmed in your written itinerary.

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
The Rongai Route begins close to the Kenyan border on Kilimanjaro's quiet northern face. After registration formalities at the gate, the trail climbs through thick pine forest and moorland with views towards the vast Kenyan plains. The first camp, Simba Camp, is a small and peaceful site with open views of the northern slopes.
Simba Camp to Kikelewa Caves
The trail climbs steadily northward through increasingly open moorland with giant heather and groundsel. Views to the north across the Kenyan savannah are extraordinary on clear days. Kikelewa Caves — natural lava caves offering some shelter — mark the camp for the night at the base of Mawenzi Peak's dramatic cliffs.
Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn
A shorter day to allow acclimatisation. The trail climbs through a dramatic, volcanic alpine desert towards Mawenzi Tarn — a small glacial lake nestled beneath the jagged towers of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is free for rest, hydration and an optional acclimatisation hike. The views of Mawenzi's sheer rock faces are extraordinary.
Mawenzi Tarn — Acclimatisation Day
A full acclimatisation rest day at Mawenzi Tarn. This is the key advantage of the seven-day itinerary over the six-day option, giving the body time to adapt before crossing the Saddle to Kibo Hut. Light walks around the tarn and up towards Mawenzi Peak may be offered by the guide team, with hydration and careful rest the priorities.
Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Crossing the barren Saddle — the broad plateau separating Mawenzi and Kibo — this day provides some of the most otherworldly landscapes on the mountain. We reach the Kibo camp area directly below the crater wall before the summit night. An early dinner precedes the midnight departure.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
At midnight we begin the long ascent on loose scree to Gillman's Point, then press on along the crater rim path to Uhuru Peak — Africa's highest point. After celebrating the summit, we descend the Marangu trail back through the Saddle to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight. The descent from summit to camp feels satisfying and well-earned.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
A long but consistently downhill day retracing the Marangu trail to the gate. The forest section is a welcome return to warmth and greenery after days on the high alpine desert. Park formalities and summit certificates are completed at Marangu Gate, after which our vehicle transfers the group back to Moshi for the post-climb celebration.

Route Overview
Why choose the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's sole northern approach, beginning near the Kenyan border and ascending through some of the mountain's most peaceful and least-visited terrain. The northern slopes are drier and receive far less rainfall than the southern routes, making Rongai a reliable choice during the rainy season. Climbers pass through pine forest, high moorland and beneath the dramatic rock towers of Mawenzi Peak before crossing the Saddle to Kibo Hut for the summit push. The descent follows the Marangu trail via Horombo Hut, offering scenic variety between ascent and descent. Our seven-day itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatisation rest day at Mawenzi Tarn — a critical advantage over the six-day standard option.

How the altitude builds
The Rongai Route is a steady northern ascent from the gate at 1,950m to Kibo Hut at 4,703m, followed by a sharp summit push to 5,895m and a long descent on the Marangu trail. The dedicated acclimatisation rest day at Mawenzi Tarn is the key acclimatisation benefit, and the trek finishes with the long descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate. The day-by-day itinerary below gives the altitude of each camp.
