Sleeping-bag rating:

we recommend a “−30°” bag without specifying the rating standard. The rental ratings on this page (−20°C and −29°C) are owner-confirmed correct; they are not classified as comfort, limit or extreme ratings unless documented for the model. Confirm the bag’s model and suitability for your route and season with our team before the climb. A sleeping-bag liner adds warmth and keeps the bag clean.

Optional extras

Four-season sleeping tents

Four-season Mountain Hardwear Trango 3 or Trango 4 tents, or The North Face tents, used on camping itineraries depending on availability. They shield you from wind, rain and cold. A particular model cannot be guaranteed for every booking.

Sleeping mattresses

Approximately 1.5-inch-thick sleeping mattresses for camping itineraries. A personal inflatable sleeping pad can be rented separately if you prefer extra cushioning.

Dining / mess tents

Dining and mess tents are included on camping itineraries, providing a sheltered space for meals and evening relaxation after a day of trekking.

Camp tables & chairs

Camp tables and chairs for relaxing and dining after a day of trekking.

Eating utensils

Plates, cups and cutlery so you can enjoy hot meals prepared by your crew.

Emergency oxygen (2L and 3L cylinders)

Emergency oxygen is carried in 2L and 3L cylinders for emergency use, not as a routine summit aid. Guides assess symptoms and wellbeing alongside pulse-oximeter readings. The number of cylinders, pressure, usable supply and treatment duration are not stated and should not be inferred.

Pulse oximeters

Finger devices used to measure oxygen saturation. Readings are one of several ways guides monitor how you are coping with altitude.

First-aid & emergency-response kits

First-aid, trauma and emergency-response kits. Guides are trained to treat minor injuries, but cannot prescribe or administer medicines.

Portable stretchers

Portable stretchers are available to carry a climber safely and comfortably during an emergency descent where the ground allows.

Two-way radios & mobile communications

Two-way radios and mobile phones are carried for daily contact between camps and with our office base in Moshi. Coverage depends on location and conditions and cannot be guaranteed at every point.

Portable toilet

US$30 per day per group of up to 5 guests

Available by advance arrangement. Porters empty the holding tanks at the nearest facilities at each camp. For Crater Camp there are no shared facilities, so waste is packed out using appropriate waste-bag systems and carried down the mountain. Confirm arrangements for larger groups.

Portable shower

Price & suitable camps confirmed in advance

An optional service, typically set up at a halfway camp and at Mweka camp after summiting. Availability depends on water supply, logistics and conditions — a shower is not guaranteed at every camp.

Cot / camp bed

Subject to availability & advance quotation

A camp bed raises you off the cold ground and can improve comfort and warmth for those used to softer mattresses. Subject to availability and advance quotation.

on the mountain.

This is your personal gear — clothing, footwear, sleeping bag, daypack and documents. It is separate from the group equipment Exuberant provides. Personal sleeping bags, down jackets and hiking boots are not included; rent anything you do not own.

Microspikes: Extra Grip on Snow and Ice

Microspikes provide extra grip when the marked summit trail becomes icy, occasionally during periods of high precipitation. For an arranged approach to Furtwängler Glacier, expect snow and ice and discuss suitable traction equipment with our team. Your guide will assess conditions and boot compatibility.

Kilimanjaro Personal Packing Checklist

Exuberant Kilimanjaro Safaris — Revised

Packing advice:

use reusable waterproof packing bags and dry bags to keep gear dry and organised inside your duffel. Tanzania restricts single-use plastic bags; confirm current rules before travel rather than assuming all plastic bags are permitted. This checklist is a general guide — confirm route-specific needs with our team before you travel.

2 · Equipment provided by Exuberant

The camp, safety &

comms gear we supply.

On camping itineraries we provide the tents, mattresses, dining and mess tents, utensils and safety equipment that support your climb. Camp arrangements differ for hut-based routes such as Marangu, where sleeping and dining take place in park huts.

Safety & medical guidance

Emergency oxygen (2L and 3L cylinders) is carried for emergency use, not as a routine summit aid. Guides assess symptoms and wellbeing alongside pulse-oximeter readings. When necessary, the priority is to stop ascending, arrange descent and obtain medical assistance.

Personal medicines:

discuss personal medicines, including any altitude medication, with your clinician before travel. Tell the team about relevant medical conditions and allergies. Guides can advise when and how to take your own medication, but cannot prescribe or administer medicines.

The downloadable “Equipment Provided by Exuberant” PDF below is labelled

Original equipment reference

because it contains older safety wording. The corrected explanation above supersedes it. Mountain equipment is inspected each season and before climbs, and fresh-food resupply takes place on every trek.

3 · Optional camp extras

Comfort add-ons

by advance arrangement.

These optional extras can make camp life more comfortable. All are arranged in advance and confirmed in your booking documents — availability depends on logistics, water and conditions.

Shared long-drop toilets are provided at most camps on the mountain. They are basic facilities used by many climbers; a portable toilet is the comfortable alternative for those who prefer privacy. At Crater Camp there are no shared facilities, so waste is packed out using appropriate systems.

Single-room & single-tent supplements:

prefer your own room or tent? A hotel single-room supplement costs US$80 per night, and a single-occupancy mountain tent costs an additional US$30 per mountain night. Request these arrangements when booking, subject to availability. The supplements are separate and apply only to the relevant nights; a single-tent supplement does not provide private hut accommodation on the Marangu Route. These supplements are charged per night — equipment rental prices remain per trip. See our

for the full detail.

4 · Gear rental prices

Rent what you

don't own.

Selected equipment is available to rent. See our rental table and confirm availability and sizing in advance. Each listed rental price covers one item (or one pair where shown) for the full booked climbing trip.

Item

Rental price per trip (USD)

per pair

Each listed rental price covers one item — or one pair where marked — for the full booked climbing trip. Prices for gloves, glove liners, socks, walking poles, gaiters and hiking boots are per pair. Prices may vary by supplier; confirm availability, sizing and the final charge before booking.

Notes on the rental list:

the sleeping-bag temperature ratings shown (−20°C and −29°C) are owner-confirmed correct. They are not classified as comfort, limit or extreme ratings unless documented for the model; confirm the actual model before booking. Crampons and microspikes are different traction equipment; confirm the appropriate type for your route, conditions and boot compatibility with our team. A rental sleeping mat is a personal additional rental; the standard camping mattress is listed separately under provided equipment.
