Where do you sleep on
Your hotel before and after the climb
Our standard Kilimanjaro climbing package includes one hotel night before the climb and one night afterwards, on a bed-and-breakfast basis, with two guests sharing. Your quotation confirms the hotel, room arrangements and any supplements. Additional nights can be arranged at extra cost.
Camping on Kilimanjaro
Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Umbwe, Northern Circuit and Shira itineraries use tent accommodation. Our camping equipment includes four-season Mountain Hardwear Trango 3 or Trango 4 tents, or The North Face tents, depending on availability, plus foam sleeping mats. A particular model cannot be guaranteed for every booking.
These tents are designed for three people; our usual arrangement is two climbers sharing, allowing additional space for personal gear. Your booking confirms the actual tent allocation.
A well-pitched tent provides shelter from mountain weather, but warm clothing, a suitable sleeping bag and keeping your equipment dry remain essential. Nights become colder as you climb.
Single-room & single-tent supplements
Prefer your own room or tent? A hotel single-room supplement costs US$80 per night, and a single-occupancy mountain tent costs an additional US$30 per mountain night. Request these arrangements when booking, subject to availability. The supplements are separate and apply only to the relevant nights.
A single-tent supplement provides a private tent on the camping routes; it does not provide private hut accommodation on the Marangu Route, where hut space is shared. Hotel single-room supplements apply only to hotel nights, and the single-tent supplement applies only to mountain nights.
Marangu Route huts
The Marangu Route uses shared mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo instead of the tent accommodation used on the camping routes. Hut space is limited, so early booking helps us arrange your preferred departure.
Expect basic shared accommodation, sleeping spaces with mattresses, communal dining arrangements and shared toilet facilities. Facilities vary between camps, and you should not expect hotel-style bathrooms or guaranteed hot showers.
You may share with climbers from other groups. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. You still need a suitable sleeping bag.
Sleeping bags
Personal sleeping bags are not included in the standard climb price. Bring a suitable bag or reserve one from us before arrival.
Sleeping bag rental
−20°C bag: US$30 per trip
−29°C bag: US$60 per trip
These sleeping-bag temperature ratings are owner-confirmed correct. They are not classified as comfort, limit or extreme ratings unless documented for the model, and a listed rating is not a guarantee that every person will feel comfortable at that temperature. Discuss the appropriate bag with us for your itinerary and expected conditions. Rental availability is confirmed before your climb. See the full list on our
