Microspikes or Crampons for Kilimanjaro: What Should You
Microspikes and crampons can improve traction, but they are designed for different situations. The right choice depends on the route, terrain, conditions, your experience and whether the equipment fits your boots.
Do you need microspikes or crampons on Kilimanjaro?
Not every Kilimanjaro climb requires additional traction equipment.
Conditions change with the weather, season, elevation and route. A trail that was clear on one climb may be icy on another.
Before your climb, ask our team and guides about the latest conditions on your planned route. We can discuss whether traction equipment is advisable and what needs to be arranged in advance.
For specialist itineraries, including a
or other technical terrain, the equipment and experience required may be different from those needed on a standard trekking route.
What are microspikes?
Microspikes are traction devices that fit over suitable footwear. They usually have a flexible harness and short metal spikes connected by chains.
They can provide extra grip on some icy or hard-packed snowy walking trails. Many climbers find them relatively easy to carry and put on when conditions change.
However, microspikes are
not a substitute for technical crampons
where the terrain or conditions require more specialised equipment.
What are crampons?
Crampons are more substantial traction devices with longer points. Different crampon designs attach to different types of boots, and some require stiff mountaineering footwear.
They may be appropriate for certain steep, icy or technical conditions—but choosing and using them requires the right equipment, training and experience.
If your planned itinerary involves technical terrain, discuss the full equipment requirements with our team well before your climb.
Microspikes vs crampons
Microspikes
Crampons
Neither option makes slippery ground risk-free. Your guide’s assessment and your ability to use the equipment safely matter.
Why might traction be useful on the descent?
After the summit attempt, climbers descend while often tired and operating at altitude. If sections are icy, confident footing becomes especially important. See our
for what to expect higher on the mountain.
Traction devices may help in appropriate conditions, but they must fit correctly and be suited to the surface. Your guide will advise when to use them and when to remove them.
Will microspikes or crampons fit my boots?
Don’t assume they will. Check:
The size of the traction device against your boot size.
Whether the harness or attachment fits your boot securely.
Whether the boot is suitable for the type of crampon.
That the device stays in place while walking.
How to put it on and remove it while wearing gloves.
If possible, practise before the trek. Bring your boots when checking rental equipment so compatibility can be assessed. Our
covers fit, waterproofing and breaking boots in before your trek.
Can I rent microspikes or crampons from Exuberant?
Microspikes or crampons can be reserved through Exuberant for
US$50 per trip
, subject to availability. Please contact us in advance with your route, dates and boot information so we can discuss the appropriate equipment.
Microspikes and crampons are different items. We’ll confirm what is available and suitable for your climb before booking. See our
for the full packing and rental list.
What about an ice axe?
An ice axe is
not a routine item for every Kilimanjaro trek
. Some specialist routes or conditions may require technical equipment and skills.
If your itinerary includes technical terrain, discuss the equipment, training and guiding arrangements with us in advance. Carrying an ice axe without knowing how to use it is not a substitute for proper preparation.
Our advice
Don’t buy or rent traction equipment solely because it appeared on someone else’s packing list. Instead:
Tell us your route and travel dates.
Ask about current and expected trail conditions.
Check the equipment against your boots.
Practise using it where appropriate.
Follow your guide’s instructions on the mountain.
Conditions can change, so the final decision may need to be adjusted as your climb approaches or while you’re on the mountain.
Not sure what to bring?
and we’ll help you prepare.
